The pressure at Manchester United was 'absolutely unbearable for Van Gaal according to Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan.
Van Gaal was sacked 48 hours after he led United to their first FA Cup triumph in twelve years.
Van Gaal's future this season had basically hinged on him making the top four with the team, and since the defeat at West Ham, a lot if people saw his sack coming.
Apart from not making the top four, the Dutchman had been under pressure for the brand of football he plays, especially on the attacking front. United struggled for goals, as the team scored a record low 49 Premier League goals this season.
This coupled with the team's exit from both the Champions League and the Europa League meant Van Gaal was under immense pressure at Old Trafford.
"We could all see the strain at Wembley," Marcel van der Kraan told Talksports.
"I attended his last press conference and you could tell then that the pressure he was under was absolutely unbearable.
"He expected to stay. He was not under the impression that he would be sacked. He thought he had the authority and the capability to turn things around. He said, ‘I need that third year and I’m convinced I’m going to do it.'
“He thought he would have the backing and that’s probably going to be his biggest disappointment of all, in the Manchester United board and owners."
