José Mourinho wants this United legend to join his backroom staff at Old Trafford

The new Manchester United manager wants Rio Ferdinand to join his about to be assembled backroom staff at Old Trafford.

Mourinho sees Ferdinand as a United legend who understands the Man United setting and can help restore the team's glory days.

Mourinho was confirmed United's new manager on Friday, replacing Van Gaal.

Ferdinand was one of the first few former United players that wished the Portuguese well, above that, Rio defended Mourinho on a number of issues in his assessment of the new United gaffer.

Ferdinand will be a great addition to Mourinho's backroom staff.

Rio formed a solid partnership with Vidic and was one of the most important players in the last successful Sir Alex Ferguson's era.

Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, six Community Shields, three League cups, one Champions League and one UEFA Super cup in his twelve year playing time at United.

Mourinho's interest in Ferdinand raises questions about the future of Ryan Giggs at United.
