Mourinho started scouting for United months before Van Gaal's sacking - Report

The Portuguese has been favorite to replace Van Gaal since the beginning of this year.

Mourinho's sack at Chelsea last December coincided with the beginning of Van Gaal's toughest time at United this season. And the Portuguese had always been in the wait for the United job.

According to several reports, Manchester United officials meet with the Mourinho's representative in clandestine meetings, to assure each other that the deal was on the line.

Full time negotiations have started and a deal has been agreed.

According to an exclusive by Manchester Evening News, Mourinho has began scouting for the players he would sign when he replaces Van Gaal, even while the Dutchman was still in charge.

Mourinho is said to have identified four key positions he would want to improve in the United squad.

His priority in the rebuilding process at United include the centre back position, the central midfield, the right midfield and the centre forward.

United have been linked with a move for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the deal is expected to be confirmed days after Mourinho is unveiled as the new United boss.

Mourinho is also keen on a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario.
