The former Blackpool manager and now Sky Sports pundit believes United should have considered former defender Steve Bruce, when Van Gaal was sacked.
United confirmed Van Gaal's sack on Monday and appointed José Mourinho on Friday, after months of speculation.
Current Hull City manager, Bruce led the Tigers back to the Premier League, becoming the first manager to lead four teams (Hull City and Birmingham City twice each) to promotion out of the Championship.
Holloway thinks it's only a matter of time before the former Manchester United defender will be considered for top jobs.
"I know they were talking about Manchester United and who was going to get it, and I know Jose Mourinho did, but seriously, why doesn't someone like Bruce get considered?" He told Sky Sports.
"It's only a matter of time before people like Steve get appreciated at the top level of this game and just given a chance."
Yes, with the experience he is gathering now, Bruce may one day be a top contender for the United managerial position in the nearest future.
He is one of the most successful Sir Alex Ferguson's players on the touchline.
