Thierry Henry: This Manchester United star will be key to England's Euro dreams

The French legend has said Wayne Rooney will be key to England's ambitions in the European Championship.

Rooney, 30 is England's all time highest goal scorer, but his performance as a striker has dropped rapidly over the last 12 months.

The presence of strikers like Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy means England can afford not to play Rooney as a striker.

Rooney has been drafted to the midfield at United, a role he's played well, but faces competition with the likes of Dele Alli and Danny Drinkwater for space in the Three Lion's midfield.

Rooney is arguably the most experience player in the current England setup and Henry thinks his experience is something England  will need during the competition.

Sky Sports asked Henry who are England's key players for the Championship? He replied:

" I have to mention Harry Kane. You finally have a guy who can bail you out in some games. If you are defending you know he can always score at any moment.

I would also like to mention Wayne Rooney. Is he going to start?

"That is going to be Roy Hodgson's problem throughout the whole tournament because I'm sure the press and the fans are going to argue that throughout the whole tournament.

"Rooney is going to be key, even though he is not playing. To be in and around the youngsters will be key. We saw with Tottenham recently, for example, that those youngsters can be mentally
weak sometimes.

"Rooney, who has the experience of playing in a lot of tournaments and being sent off against Portugal, is vital in that dressing room. How many guys have been in big tournaments before?"

There is no doubt Rooney will be a part of the Three Lion's setup to the competition. But where and how he will play is left to Roy Hodgson.

  1. I am getting pretty sick of people saying Rooney shouldn't start. He should. For me he is England's best player. Just because he isn't scoring goals every game from 40 yards and screaming in free kicks every game doesn't make him a bad player. He plays deeper now and he is the one player that can pick out a pass in this England team. He is the closest thing we have to the like of Beckham, Gerrard and Scholes. He needs to play behind Kane and Vardy and try to assist all day long.
