Real Madrid defender Raphael
Varane is not perfectly happy at the Spanish club.
The Frenchman has long been linked to United even before his move to the capital club. Varane moved to Madrid in 2011, with current manager Zidane believed to to have had a large influence on the move.
He has however had reduced playing time since Zidane took over and Varane knows he is in a crucial stage of his career.
The defender has been benched for crucial games, and now the player may be evaluating his options.
"Until November I played in almost every game, He told AFP
"I'm at a crucial stage in the season.
"I know my qualities and I know what I'm capable of doing.
"It's also true that I made a few uncharacteristic mistakes but, over the whole of the season, you can’t fixate on this. There have been loads of positives.
"I think a footballer needs to play to thrive and to feel important.
"It's true that I would have liked to play the season's decisive games, especially in the Champions League, but these are the manager's decisions."
With a mind like this, United can lure the defender away from Madrid with the promise of regular playing time.
The anticipated arrival of Mourinho could also act in United's favour as the pair worked together at Real.
Daley Blind and Chris Smalling have formed a sting defensive partnership, but have struggled with set pieces, with Blind not an outright defender.
