The United left back said he thought he would be back before the end of the season, to stand a chance of making it with the England squad.
Shaw suffered a double fracture in United's away Champions League game in Holland against PSV, last September.
He is back training, but lacks match fitness, and wouldn't be featuring for Unites again this season Van Gaal has confirmed.
Shaw however wished the Three Lions well at the Championship. He tweeted this:

The defender will resume preseason a little earlier to push up his fitness ahead of next season.
