The former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti was one of the favorites to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, when he retired as United manager in 2013.
The Italian had a lunch with Fergie, but rejected Manchester United's offer because Real Madrid came calling.
The Bayern bound manager says he would have taken over at United had the Madrid offer not showed up.
"It was a nice lunch. Alex chose the wine, really expensive," He told The Times.
"I had already spoken to Real Madrid.
"For the experience, a manager has to go to Madrid. If it hadn’t been for that, I would have come (to United) 100 per cent."
Sir Alex was finally replaced by Everton's David Moyes, that was sacked just season into the job.
