Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will only move to United in the summer if José Mourinho becomes United's next manager.
The former Chelsea manager is the favorite to replace Van Gaal at the end of the season.
Varane has had a difficult time breaking into the Madrid's first eleven, with manager Zidane preferring the Pepe and Sergio Ramos partnership.
According to Daily Star, Varane will not consider a move to Old Trafford if Mourinho is not confirmed boss.
The Portuguese signed the Frenchman from Lens to Real in 2011, and the 22 year old is keen on reuniting with his former boss.
United have been solid defensively this season, but have struggled with set pieces.
It was United's undoing in their defeat to West Ham, and has cost the team on a number of occasions this season.
Daley Blind is not an outright defender, and Mourinho may consider signing Varane to partner Smalling in what looks like a good partnership on paper.
