Louis Van Gaal stopped Man United's move for this key target

The Dutchman reportedly ended United's interest in the Benfica star Renato Sanches who has now joined Bayern Munich.

There were clear indications that United had interest in the player and were close to signing him. His agent (Jorge Mendes) is also close to United.

But according to reports from the BBC and Telegraph, Van Gaal ended United's pursuit of the Portuguese in favour of other targets.

The German champions confirmed the signing of the the 18 year old on Tuesday in a £27.5m deal, which came as a shock to a lot of United fans, as the German club were rarely mentioned in the race to sign the player.

Van Gaal stopped the move in anticipation that he would be in charge at Old Trafford next season.

But with the team's 3-2 defeat at Upton Park, the possibility of seeing Van Gaal at United next season has significantly reduced.
