Manchester United travel to East Midlands to face Derby County in the F.A cup fourth round. The competition is the only viable source of silverware for United this season, and the United captain is anticipating a tough Friday night for Van Gaal's men.
"Derby have nothing to lose. No-one is expecting them to win and they will try to cause an upset. We know that and have to be ready for that.
"It will be a difficult night for us, Sheffield United at home was a tough game, so we have to be ready to battle and win the battle. Hopefully then our qualities will show through."
Manchester United required a 90th minute penalty to knock out Sheffield United in the third round, and will be hoping for a much improved performance, after the team's woeful defeat by Southampton over the weekend.
Rooney was speaking to MUTV.
