The former Chelsea manager is confident of succeeding Van Gaal as the next United manager within the next six months, reports the Sun.
The sacked Chelsea manager is reported to have rejected a number of jobs, since leaving the Blues, in favour of the United job.
United manager Van Gaal has been under intense pressure for most of the season, and a defeat to Liverpool could cost him his job.
The Portuguese has stayed back in England since losing his Chelsea job, and has reportedly contacted one of his trusted backroom staff, who may be willing to join him at United.
