The Manchester United skipper has come out to the defence of Van Gaal, admitting that the United players also must share part of the blame and criticism for the team's awful season so far.
United are currently fifth on the table, and risk missing out of the Champions League next season.
But Rooney believes it unfair to blame Van Gaal alone for United's current form. He said (Via Mail)
"It’s unfair to say it’s the manager, We’re on the pitch, so the players have to take a lot of responsibility for performances and results.
"We have to stand up and take criticism when it’s there. We want to win, of course — we always want to win — and we’re trying. Even when you’re giving 100 per cent, it doesn’t always come off."
The 3-1 F.A Cup victory over Derby is believed to have bought manager Van Gaal some extra time at United, and now the team must must improve their performance in the league to give qualifying for the Champions League a fight.
