Manchester United 1 - 0 Sheffield United: Player ratings

De Gea: 6
The United keeper did perfectly all that was required of him. He was called to action a few times, and calmly answered.

Darmian: 6

He played a little high on the right. He wasn't troubled defensively, did a nice job on the wings, and played some  some nice passes from defence to attack.

Smalling 7.5

Another solid from (Pele) as Van Gaal called him in his pre match press conference. He did a good job defensively and had a number of good runs with the ball from defence to attack.

Blind : 6
Another good day in office for the Dutchman, playing as a centre back.

Borthwick-Jackson: 6

Started really well. Calm on the ball, confident enough to get forward. Looks good for 18, put in a number of decent crosses, but still has a lot to learn.

Schweinsteiger : 6

He was efficient, but his willingness to play on after his late injury scare was great

Fellaini: 5

Another performance that didn't do
his starting quest any good. Wasn't energetic, nor effective.

Herrera :4

The Spaniard was like a shadow of his normal self. Showed his typical brilliant touches, but couldn't assert himself in the game. Not surprisingly substituted.

Mata: 5.5

Started the game well, but faded with the game, substituted midway the second half. Had a number of misplaced passes.

Martial: 6

The Frenchman started the game on the left, and was visible throughout the game. Had a goal bound shot blocked late in the game. Could have offered more if he started as the top man

Rooney: 5.5

Another not too convincing performance from the United skipper. Performed his greatest task of the game by scoring the penalty that gave United the win.

SUBS

Depay: 6

He was lively when he came on, made a couple of runs and faced the Sheffield defenders one on one. Had a couple of shots just inches away from goal, and was United's savior when he was brought down for the penalty. An effective sub he was.

Lingard: 5

Great to see him back in the team, after his injury. Made a number if runs and take-ons.

Pereira: Not rated.

  1. i thought Perreira was brilliant in his cameo. Rooney was the Martial for the day. Martial didn't look too bothered. smalling re-finding his earlier season form. otherwise accurate.
