He had no reported injury and Van Gaal didn't talk about him in his pre match press conference.
But speaking just before the game, Van Gaal revealed that the midfielder is in the 'red zone' and needs rest.
"Ashley Young is in the red zone due to the Christmas period and the same is for Morgan Schneiderlin so I have to rotate.
"But when I am not obliged to rotate, I don't rotate."
With schweinsteiger doubtful for the Newcastle clash, the Frenchman is likely to return to the team for the clash on Tuesday.
