Manchester United 1 - 0 Sheffield United: Post match Van Gaal and players reactions

Wayne Rooney believes getting through to the next round was the most important thing, though he feels the team is improving.
Speaking after the game he said:

"Today was tough - this cup can throw up a lot of surprises but we did what we needed to do.

"You want to win games and you have to do that by scoring goals, we won the game and that's what counts.

"We're improving as a team and we can feel that. For now, we are just happy that we got through to the next round."

Van Gaal also echoed Rooney's idea that the team is improving. He believes Sheffield United deserve some praise for  the way they defended, but the offered nothing attacking wise.

Van Gaal: "It is more easy to defend than to attack. We win this match and that is the most important thing, I said it to the board too.

"No one is talking about how many chances Sheffield made. They're only talking about their solid defence."

The Dutchman also knows his team must improve

"We have to do it better than today. We have to be quicker. The pass has to be at the right speed. We're improving."

He still believes he has the support of some of the fans.

"Fans were waving to me so I waved back. It's only polite."
