The former United midfielder has been critical of Van Gaal and his methods. But after Rooney's inspired performance against Newcastle, the former midfield mastero has praised the striker.
The BT sports pundit said after the game:
"Everything he did was brilliant. That second goal was sensational.
"He's been on the brink of looking like the Wayne Rooney of old in the last two or three weeks.
"This is the Rooney we love. It's great to have him back. I just hope this carries on."
The striker took his goal tally against Newcastle to 14 in the Premier League, his personal best against any opposition in the league.
