The former Pompey boss thinks United may end up sticking with Van Gaal to the end of the season, not minding missing out of the top four.
United currently lie fifth on the table, out of the Champions League spot, and unless the fortunes of the team improves, United may not qualify for next season's Champions League.
Writing in his column for the The Telegraph, he wrote:
"I cannot see anything happening with Van Gaal because, quite simply, if United wanted to get rid of him they would have done it by now.
"United will have no problems attracting managers of that calibre (Like Pep Guardiola or Diego Simeone) because of their reputation but those guys are simply not available at the moment so I fully expect Van Gaal to battle on."
