Manchester United host Liverpool on Sunday in a mouth
watering tie, with both teams experiencing a contrasting phase at this period of
the season. Last season, Liverpool did the double over United last season, in a
season that was Brendan Rodgers first with the Reds, and arguably their best in
a couple of years. While for United, last season was possibly their worst in
over a decade, with the team failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League
under Sir Alex Ferguson successor – David Moyes.
Fast forward one year and things have changed drastically
for both teams. While Brendan Rodgers is still in charge at Liverpool, his
title challenging squad of last season, have sold talismanic striker Luis
Suarez, replaced him with Mario Balotelli, and also signed a couple of players.
But Brendan Rodgers’s new squad have failed to reach the giddy heights of last
season. The team have also been plagued by injury to another prolific striker
in Daniel Sturridge, and currently lie ninth on the table. With manager Brendan
Rodgers one of the favourites by bookmakers to get sacked this season.
For Manchester United, it is a new era under Luis Van Gaal,
which saw an influx of quality players to Old Trafford. Though the era began
roughly, the team seems to be currently finding its balance. With five victories
in their last five games, this includes wins over Aresenal and Southampton
in the process.
For Manchester United and their fans, there’s no better way to extend
their winning streak, than with a victory over long term arch rivals Liverpool.
Redly United looks at two reasons why United should get the
better of their opponent on Sunday.
1. Both teams confidence level far apart: based on current form, both teams are miles apart. United are in the best form of their season, and the year with five straight wins, and the winners attitude of grinding out results even when they are not at their best. While for Liverpool, the team have only won two in their last six matches and got knocked out of the Champions League during the week. The team lacks and need inspiration and drive from somewhere and someone. And this is in contrast to United that seem to be having one or more players rising up to the big stage and putting in match winning performances for the team. At some point in the early part of the season, Di Maria was the man in form, after which Rooney took over the match wining baton, and now Robin Van Persie seems to be the man in form, while De Gea has been an ever present figure for United this season. Though United’s defence doesn’t look water tight, the team have not conceded too many goals recently and going forward, United have the goals in their team.
2 United home form this season: Old Trafford seems
to have developed into a place of fortress for United this season. The team
have won six in their last seven home matches drawing one in the process. This season
at Old Trafford, United are averaging two goals per game which is a decent record,
and with Liverpool’s away conceding record of thirteen gaols in seven matches,
united may have an edge. If United’s attack can live up to their billing, expectation
and form, United fans might just be smiling out of Old Trafford on Sunday.
