The former United midfielder doesn't believe United can't win the league this season, though he thinks United can make the top four.
United are currently eight points behind table toppers Arsenal, with the Gunners having a game in hand.
Fourth place Tottenham Hotspur could go five points ahead of United if they win their one game in hand against Leicester City.
Speaking on BT Sports after United's 3-3 draw with Newcastle, Scholes said:
"Is it a team that can go on to win the league? I don't think so. Top four? That's a definite possibility.
"The last 8 results haven't been good enough. You're playing against a team 2nd bottom here and they've not won that game as well."
United's next six fixtures are as follows:
Sun 17Jan: Liverpool v Man Utd
Sat 23 Jan: Man Utd v Southampton
Tue 2: Feb: Man Utd v Stoke
Sun 7: Feb: Chelsea v Man Utd
Sat 13 Feb: Sunderland v Man Utd
Sun 28 Feb: Man Utd v Arsenal.
