Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is hoping he can have a prolonged and effective career like Ryan Giggs.
The winger retired at United as a centre midfielder, after starting his career as a winger. Reduced pace and speed on the flanks made Sir Alex Ferguson made that change, one that help Giggs played into his 40's.
Rooney's career has taken a similar progression, as he played majority of United's games in the second half of last season as a midfielder. He now hopes to emulate Giggs.
“All players' games develop and change over time — look at Giggsy towards the end of his career compared to the beginning. What I can say is I will continue to develop my game and adapt and improve throughout." He told new edition of the United We Stand fanzine.
"Over time and with experience, you see the game and experience the game differently, which leads to different decisions.
"I think my record shows I have always enjoyed assisting goals as much as scoring them and I also enjoy the involvement from deeper positions."
This is one of the easiest decision for José Mourinho to make. Rooney has carved a niche for himself in the midfield, both in the national team and at United.
Fans will be hoping he delivers top class performance next season from his new found role.
