Mats Hummels opens up on why he turned down Manchester United

The German defender has revealed that he turned down an English club (Manchester United) because they wouldn't be playing in the Champions League next season.

United have long been linked with the World Cup winner, since the days of David Moyes. Hummels however decided to return to Bayern Munich where he started his career.

Speaking on his transfer to Bayern, he said:

"Fundamentally, England, Spain and Germany were the relevant leagues I could see myself playing football in.

"But at this stage there just was not that one English club where the overall package was fitting.

"The overall package means: a club which fascinates me; a club I have always wanted to join, and where the sporting constellation is right, and which of course plays Champions League football next season.

"And because of the latter one club was ruled out, and you can envision which club that was."

According to ESPN, even though Hummels didn't expressly mentioned United, he did not intervene when the interviewer suggested that the Red Devils had been the club chasing his signature.

This would be one of the biggest price United would be paying for not qualifying for the Champions League.

Hummels at 27, would have been a complete package as a defender for United. He's experienced, at the prime of his career and would form a seemingly good partnership with Chris Smalling.

United have signed Eric Bailly, and fans will be hoping he makes the cut, and develops into a top player for the team.
