David de Gea has said Manchester United's appointment of Mourinho was one needed by the club.
The former Chelsea manager replaces Van Gaal who was sacked last season despite winning the FA Cup.
De Gea opened up that he joined United to win titles, and is hoping Mourinho with his personality and mindset will guide United back to the top.
"I came to United to win trophies." De Gea told Spanish media outfit Cadena Ser.
"It is true these last two years we have not been at the level the club deserves.
"We hope that Mourinho, with his will to win, will make sure United to return to the top.
"I have not spoken with Mourinho and not asked team-mates about him. I think we already know him.
"At United we've missed a manager like Mourinho. With the personality and mindset of a winner. Getting him was right."
