Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has opened up that the difference between both goalkeepers is 'minimal', while he settled for the United shot stopper for the La Roja's first game of the European Championship against Czech Republic.
Casillas has been facing stiff competition with De Gea, who had a fantastic personal season at Old Trafford.
De Gea kept a clean record sheet in the game, and will be expected to keep his place when the team face Turkey on Friday.
Del Bosque said it was painful to see a legend like Casillas on the bench.
“That Iker doesn't play is painful for me,” he told reporters ahead of their match with Turkey.
“He is a player that we have to respect because he has been here for 14 years. I tried to approach things as normally as possible. I had a talk with him because I felt he deserved it. He has more than 160 caps . We always try to make the best choice and the difference (between De Gea and Casillas) them is minimal.
“I liked how Iker acted on the bench. I saw he was very serene and relaxed. It's good to see the substitutes living the game and feeling the success as if they were on the pitch. He can help us a lot." He added.
