The former Manchester United defender has compared the England captain to Ryan Giggs in terms of the change in their playing positions.
Rooney ended last season at Old Trafford as a midfielder, and has started the European Championship on a bright note as a midfielder. He was voted man of the match in England's 1-1 draw with Russia, and also pulled the strings against Wales.
This means Rooney's future at both national and club level lies in the midfield.
This was the same change Ryan Giggs made towards the end of his career. The Welshman, a flying brilliant winger in his younger days ended up as a centre midfielder under Sir Alex Ferguson, and Ferdinand sees Rooney taking that same progression.
“Wayne Rooney showed everyone he can play in that midfield role against Russia,” He said.
"He is evolving as a player – a bit like Ryan Giggs. Because of his intelligence he can do it seamlessly."
That will be one of the few changes Mourinho will have to make next season. Find a suitable place for Rooney in his new midfield.
Judging by his performances in the Euro's so far, United fans will be delighted at the prospects of Rooney the midfielder.
Do you think Rooney can be the new Scholes?
