Club President confirms Manchester United made record transfer bid for star forward

Manchester United made a 'mad offer' for Bayern forward Thomas Muller last year according to club supremo Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

The striker has been linked with United in time past, but Van Gaal made an audacious bid for the player we can confirm.

Van Gaal gave the 25 year old his breakthrough at Bayern and knows the full potential of the striker.

United has  lacked a central focus for the most of last season, and the Dutchman must have settled for Martial after he failed in his pursuit for players like Muller.

"Thomas Muller came out of it [the youth academy]. [He is] born near Munich, formed here, the hero of the fans,"  the German legend said.

"We had a mad offer from Manchester United last year, which was not a topic for one second.

"We could have secured a world-record transfer fee." He added.

A world record transfer fee means the bid was way more than £85m, Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale in 2013.
