The Manchester United striker could be back in time to face Norwich City, reports Manchester Evening News.
The striker has missed the last three matches after been substituted in the match against Leicester City.
In his absence, United were knocked out of the Champions League and also lost back to back matches.
The striker has struggled for goals this season, with only two Premier League goals to his credit. But with the long injury list at United, having Rooney back would do the team some good.
United will continue to miss Bastian Schweinsteiger for the clash as he would be sitting out his second game of his three match suspension.
Defenders Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and midfielder Ander Herrera should also be nearing return, as Van Gaal expects the trio to be back in the team before Christmas.
