Van Gaal not prepared for the media spotlight at Old Trafford: Ray Wilkins

The former United midfielder has said manager Van Gaal wasn't prepared for the media intensity at Old Trafford.

The United manager was reported to have been sacked, when he hasn't, and has also faced intense criticism from the fans, ex-players and the media.

His United side are winless in their last six, and have suffered three straight defeats. His style of play has also come under the microscope as United seem to have lost their attacking swag.

Van Gaal walked out of his press conference ahead of the boxing day tie with Stoke, after he demanded an apology from the media.

But the former Chelsea assistant manager said any United manager must be mentally tough and must be ready to play a certain type of football. Speaking with Talksport, he said:

“The media in this country are very intense, I don't think Van Gaal was quite prepared for what has been said and written about him over the last couple of weeks.

“You have to be extremely mentally tough to go into a place like Old Trafford. You are expected to win and expected to play in a certain style and when that's not happening the supporters will let you know.

“It’s not good enough for Man United just to be in the top four or even at the top of the league, they have to perform how the fans want them
to perform - with a bit of a cavalier style.”

United travel to Stoke City on boxing day in a must win match for United.
