Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes Anthony Martial should play more as a central striker, that Martial would be his number 9, if he was the coach.
The young Frenchman was a surprise signing for United and was an instant hit in his first few games, scoring five goals and assisting three goals in his first nine games. But the striker experienced a drought of goals which coincided with Van Gaal moving the player from the centre to the wing.
His goal against Norwich was his first in nine games and Henry believes Martial should be playing more centrally.
Speaking in Sky sport's Monday night football, Henry said:
"I actually do not know what he is doing there" [On the wings].
"He should be there [in the box] having a one versus one, scoring and celebrating."
Martial has drawn comparison with the Arsenal hero and Henry said he believes Martial was a solution to one of United's biggest problems.
"They wanted a guy who scored goals. They wanted a guy to run in behind fast. He came in and did that. Suddenly now he finds himself out there, almost not touching the ball."
"I think if I had a player like that, he would be my No 9 and the rest are around him."
Using players off their natural and most effective position is one the major reasons why fans are upset with Van Gaal. The Dutchman is under intense pressure and may be lucky to survive being the United coach till new year.
