Former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis has questioned Van Gaal's style and understanding of the game in England.
Van Gaal's style of football is the conservative, possession based type of football, as opposed to the fast, and quick counter attacking football, embedded in the club's philosophy by Sir Alex Ferguson.
United without a win in their last six matches, Van Gaal has come under intense pressure and criticism because of his style.
"I am disappointed with the way United are playing." He said.
"Under Alex Ferguson , we played in a more attacking style of football and played in a 4-4-2. Van Gaal sees things differently."
"I just don't think that Van Gaal understands English football."
The Ukrainian also said United lack leaders.
"A team needs to have leaders, like Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Peter Schmeichel, who can give the right things at the necessary moment and can show their leadership qualities.
"The coach does not want this and this is the reason for such disastrous results."
