Mark Hughes questions the mentality of some United players

Ahead of their boxing day clash  with United, former United player now Stoke City manager has questioned the mentality of some United players in this phase of the club he described as a 'transition' period.

United have lot three games in a roll, and are without a victory in their last six.  They were also knocked out the Champions League, and manager Van Gaal future at the club is in doubt.

Speaking ahead of the tie, the Stoke manager said:

"I don't know what it's like there now. I've not been in that tunnel with them.

Speaking on the expectations of playing for a team like United, he said:

"But there was always an expectation that we were going to win. We didn't hope to win. We expected to win, no matter who we went up against."

But he doubt if all the current United players have got that mindset:

"I don't know if that's their mentality at the moment. I suspect most of them have that. But if you're new to the club and you're trying to find your feet, and there's a period of transition for you as a player, and there's a new group at a big club, then maybe some of them haven't quite got it.

"There have been many players who signed for Manchester United, and just couldn’t deal with the expectation."

A win at Stoke is a must for United to ease the pressure on Van Gaal. Manchester United have won 18 of their last 19 fixtures played on Boxing Day and will be hoping they can extend their boxing day winning streak.
