Van Gaal: Manchester derby could be 'do or die'

The Manchester United manager has labeled United's upcoming match as a likely do or die affair.

United were knocked out of the UEFA cup on Thursday and now shift attention to the league.

United are without a win in their last four matches, and a defeat to their City rivals will all but end their top four hopes. Van Gaal knows this and has dubbed the match a must win for his side.

When asked if the game is "do or die,"  The Dutchman replied:

"I think so.  (Via ESPN)

"We are now four points behind so you have to win, otherwise the gap is bigger and bigger and the matches you have to play are not so many. If we lose, then it is seven points and we have eight matches left, so it is very sharp to recover from that gap. It is still possible but it's difficult then, because West Ham United is also in front of us. It's not only City."

United still have faint hopes of winning the FA Cup, with an away replay with West Ham still pending.

However failing to make the top four would be a big disaster for United, and the match against City is their last redemptive opportunity.
