Manchester United 1-1 West Ham: Five things we learnt

Manchester United produced yet another below par performance at Old Trafford, and had to come from behind to draw the match.

Redlyunited look at three taking points from the game

1. Martial again ineffective in the wings

The United striker started on the wings for the team, but his best moments were when he attacked from the centre. He is on outright centre forward and playing him on the flans reduce his effectiveness.

2. Fellaini and Carrick combination ineffective

Prior to this game, this duo have started seven games for United this season, with United winning only two of those games.

This game once again showed that their combination is not that highly effective, especially in a game United need to score and attack fast.

Both midfielders are slow, and prefer to keep things safe rather than going for the jugular. A lot of sideway passes, and sluggish movement characterize games the duo combine in the midfield.

3. Bastian the catalyst

The German was the change United needed in the drab match.

He came on, was highly effective in linking the midfield to the attack, injected some urgency into the game from a United perspective.

4. Varela over Darmian?

The Uruguayan started over the Italian, and justified his place in the starting eleven. He was quick, and helped on the attack very well.

Performances like this will make it difficult for Van Gaal to have an outright starter at right back, and if he can improve, he can make the starting right back position his.

5. United postpone FA Cup judgement day

United could have been knocked out of the competition on the night, but Martial's late goal means United must travel to Upton Park for a replay.

With Arsenal and Chelsea out of the competition, this is surely United's best bet of winning a trophy this season.

But another 90 minutes or more at Upton Park stand between United and the FA Cup semi final.
