Former Spanish shot stopper Santiago Canizares has opened up that United goalkeeper David De Gea should be starting for the Spanish national team, while Iker Casillas should not even be be on the bench for the national team.
De Gea's portfolio has been on a rise over the last few seasons, with a lot of breathtaking and consistent performances.
He's one of United's most consistent performers this season, and started in Spain's 1-1 friendly with Italy. He was spectacular in the game, and made a lot of wonderful saves.
Casillas on the other hand left Madrid for FC Porto two seasons ago, has been on a slight decline. Understandably so: He is aging. He started Spain's most recent friendly against Romania that ended goalless.
Speaking after the game, Canizares told Spanish media outfit El Larguero
“De Gea should have been named as starter a long time ago.
"He has been performing much better than Casillas. I would not pick him (Casillas) as a sub, but there is no doubt that De Gea should have the title role."
The start against Romania made Casillas join Vitalijs Astafjevs of Latvia as Europe's most-capped player as he won his 166th cap for Spain.
