The Dutch multi positional player has been converted to a defender by Van Gaal. A position he has adapted to and is putting in appreciable performances week in week out.
Naturally a midfielder, because of his nice passing abilities and eye for goals, he can also play as a left back, and a centre back.
Currently with the Dutch team for their upcoming friendlies the player said he is now comfortable with playing as a centre back.
"I think I can still play at left-back and in midfield, but right now I feel good at centre-back."
His passing abilities makes him a good midfielder but he is now turning into a fantastic defender. His partnership with Smalling has been the bedrock of United's success so far this season.
