Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool: Player Ratings

Manchester United produced yet another below par performance to get knocked out of the Europa League at Old Trafford.

On a night when United created next to nothing, Redlyunited rates the performance of the United players.

De Gea: 6

The United goalkeeper was again a shield for United, making some vital saves in the game.

Unfortunately he could have done better for the Liverpool goal.

But when you consider the number of points he's won for United this season, you can't blame him.

Varela: 5

The right back was both at his best and worst for the team.

He started the game brightly, and helped out brilliantly on the attack.

But his failure to keep Phillipe Coutinho out and mark him hard was his major undoing.

Unsurprisingly substituted at half time.

Smalling: 6

Did a good job on the Liverpool attackers. Left too much space between him and Varela for the Liverpool goal.

Blind: 5.5

Another too unconvincing performance from the Dutchman.

Helped the team with his long passes and did a good job bringing the ball out of the defence, but his defending was not top notch on the night.

Rojo: 6

Arguably United's beat defender on the night.

He got into various attacking positions on the field and was always wiling to attack at any slight chance. Was effective too in defence.

Carrick: 5.5

The Englishman was again not on top of his game.

He gave away possession cheaply occasionally.

Though he was more of a defensive midfielder in the game, he didn't offer much on the attack.

Fellaini: 5

He was a surprise name in the starting eleven.

Even though he started the game unconvincingly, he grew into the game in the first half and produced an appreciable showing.

He however fizzled out in the second half, though he produced the team's only shot in target in the second half.

He also missed on of United's best half chances.

Lingard: 5

Couldn't affect the game so much. Only had a number of runs in the final third, showed flashes of brilliance,  but still lacking experience.

Mata: 3

The United playmaker was visible on the pitch, but a was absent in the game.

Playing in his favorite position and being the most experienced United player in that attack, much was expected of him.

He failed to impress on a very important night.

Martial: 7

United's best player on the night.  Always wiling to take on his marker, dribble and run.

He was fouled for the penalty and he duly converted. Had one or two half chances but couldn't connect with the goal.

Rashford: 5.5
The youngster tried his best, but it wasn't enough. Highly talented but needs more time to gain experience, for games like this.

Substitutes

Valencia: 6

Good to see him back in the team. Gave stability to the right back position. And tried to help on the attack.

Schweinsteiger: 5

Came on late, didn't do much. Conceded a free kick in a highly dangerous position.

Darmian: 5

Replaced Rojo, who had been brilliant all the night. Just came on to maintain the status quo.
