Rio Ferdinand backs Wayne Rooney to make England's Euro squad

The former Manchester United defender has criticised Wayne Rooney's critics labelling them as people that 'don't understand football.'

The United skipper started the season as United's sole and main striker but has struggled to justify the trust which made Van Gaal sell Chicharito.

Romney has scored only seven league goals this season, and his dip in form has coincided with the rise of strikers like Harry Keane and Jamie Vardy for the Three Lions.

This has led to calls from some quarters that Rooney should not make the England squad to the upcoming Euro's.

Ferdinand has however come to the rescue of Rooney, explaining why the skipper must make the England's entourage to the championship.

"People who are saying that type of rubbish [that Rooney shouldn't make the Euro squad] clearly do not understand football." Rio told IBTimes.

"Wayne Rooney has to be on the plane.,It's down to the manager whether he plays.

"This guy scores big goals in important games.

"When you go to a tournament it's not about one player. You've got to be able to rotate the squad and he'll be a part of that I'm sure."
