Real Madrid are preparing to make a last minute attempt to lure José Mourinho back to the capital club once again.
Madrid slumped to a surprising 2-0 loss to Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday. Should they be knocked out of the competition next week, club president Florentino Perez will step up efforts to bring the Portuguese back to Spain.
According to the Mirror, Madrid failed in their attempt to bring Mourinho back to Spain in January, when the club sacked Rafa Benitez.
Mourinho was believed to be expecting the United job then, as Van Gaal's team were on the fall then. But till now, no concrete decision has been reached at Old Trafford with regards to who will lead the team into next season.
Van Gaal still has the backing of some top powerful men within the United board, and there are rumours and indications that the Dutchman will still remain United's manager next season.
Mourinho has already announced that he would be back next season.
As it stands, Madrid can capitalize on United's indecision to bring the former Chelsea gaffer back to Spain.
