Official: Manchester United release four players including Nick Powell

Manchester United have released four players including Victor Valdes and Nick Powell, the club has confirmed.

The players contracts expired, and the club was unwilling to renew. The other two are George Dorrington and Oliver Rathbone.

Victor Valdes joined United from Barcelona on a free transfer, after initially moving of Old Trafford to continue his rehabilitation process from a knee injury he suffered at Barcelona, but fell out with Van Gaal.

He made only two appearances for the first team, and sometime in July 2015, Van Gaal announced that Valdes refused to play in a reserve match and hence was placed on transfer list. He was made to train alone.

He later joined Standard Liege in January 2016 on a six month loan . He was released by the Belgian side in April, before the end of his transfer due to injury.

Nick Powell's career at United was hampered by injuries and affected by Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Powell joined United from Crewe Alexandria in 2012, and showed flashes of brilliance in his first few games at United. He has since struggled with injuries, and managers after Fergie never rated him that high.
