Roy Hodgson explains Wayne Rooney's substitution against Russia

The England manager has opened up on why he substituted his captain in their 1-1 draw with Russia in their opening game of the European Championship.

England were pegged back to sharing the points with the Russians when Vasili Berezutski scored a last minute header, this after Wayne Rooney had been substituted for Jack Wilshere on the 78th minute.

Explaining the change, Hodgson says Rooney was getting tired, hence the need for the change.

"I thought he [Rooney] had a good game, but was tiring," the England manager said after the game.

"Quite a lot of players out there were tiring because, although it wasn't baking hot, there was quite a humid atmosphere which saps the strength of the players.

"We just thought, with the control we had in the game and Wilshere on the bench, we could have the luxury of taking Wayne off the field and that Jack would do a similar job. I think that's exactly what happened."

England will now have to get good results against Wales and Slovakia to stand a good chance of making it past the group stage.
