Manchester United lost the opportunity to keep up the pressure on the top four teams as they lost 1-0 to Tony Pulis side.
It was a record breaking defeat for United as they have never lost a Premier League away game against West Brom prior to this game.
Juan Mata could have passed as the scape goat for the defeat as his two yellow cards in a space of less than three minutes that led to his sending off was the major taking point of the game from a United's perspective.
And speaking after the game Van Gaal said:
"We have played 10 vs 11 men for 60 mins and it was our 5th match in 11 days. That's the reason we lost this game."
United travel to face Liverpool in the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.
