Mike Dean should have considered Mata's character before sending him off: Van Gaal

Van Gaal has branded Juan Mata's first yellow card against West Brom as 'stupid'. The United playmaker blocked the ball, after Mike Dean had given the home team a free kick. That led to his first card.

He got his second card less than three minutes later,  for attempting to kick Darren Fletcher.

That led to his first sending off in his United career, and manager Van Gaal thinks the referee should have considered Mata's character before sending him off in that manner.

Speaking after the game to MUTV, he said:

"The first yellow card was stupid because you know in advance that is a yellow card.

"But I think the referee also has to know the person who makes the tackle. Juan Mata never tries to hurt an opponent.

"It was not the smartest of fouls by Mata. The referee can whistle but I think he also has to know the character of Juan Mata.

"When you give two yellow cards within five minutes, it’s a little bit unbelievable when you know the character of Juan Mata."
