The Manchester United defender has called for consistency ahead of the new year and believes with the nature of the league and three of four straight wins for United, Van Gaal's team can top the table again.
United are without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions, and manager Van Gaal has come under intense criticism.
The improved defender believes with the way teams are dropping points here and there, a little consistency will help United up the table.
Speaking to MUTV ahead of the team's first game of the year against Swansea, he said:
“You just need to be consistent and we need to get back to that, like we were earlier in the season when we were top. With any consistency in this league, you can shoot up the table and create a gap.
"positions are always changing and there aren’t many points between teams.
"The league is that close – if you get three wins on the bounce then you can be within touching distance of the lead. Our aim is to get to the end of January and be within touching distance of the top. From there on, anything is possible.”
