Manchester United 0 - 1 Southampton: Player ratings

Manchester United mystery run returned as the team fell to a Charlie Austin debut goal late into the game.

United offered nothing on the attack as the team could only muster one shot on target throughout the whole 90 minutes. On a day no one turned up for United, we rate the performance of Van Gaal's men.

De Gea : 6
Had nothing much to do, all through the game.

Blind:  5.5
Part of a defensive set up that lacked confidence and the cutting edge to effectively contain the Southampton attackers. Gave the ball away easily on a number of occasions.

Borthwick-Jackson : 7

Another stellar performance from the youngster. Blended into the side easily and unnoticed.

Smalling: 6
Had a lot to do defensively with the power of Mane and others. Did a good job. Lucky not to have conceded a penalty for his pulling during corners.

Darmian :6

Another big source of worry for United, as he came off injured. Had an average game.

Herrera: 6
Couldn't influence the game much. Showed flashes of brilliance, but that wasn't enough.

Fellaini :4
Another questionable performance from the Belgian. From rough and mistimed challenge, to misplaced passes. He got only few things right in the pitch.

Schneiderlin : 6
Effective performance from the Frenchman against his former team. Conceded a number of free kicks in dangerous areas, that didn't hurt the team.

Lingard : 5.5
Improved but still below par performance from the young winger. His crosses were not accurate and didn't penetrate the Southampton defence enough.

Rooney : 5

Judging from his recent performances. He carried the team's goal scoring responsibility. But he didn't come near firing a shot on target. He misplaced a lot if passes and offered nothing in the final third.

Martial: 6
Always underutilised on the wing. Was United's best player in the first half, but he fades with the game.

Subs

Mata: 6
His introduction sparked life into the team, early into the second half, but he couldn't provide the magical moment.

McNair: 6
Came on for injured Darmian, and did a Fantastic job, especially in bringing out the ball from the defence.

Januzaj: 5
Brought on in a strange substitution, and he came on to play at left back. Conceded the free kick that led to the Southampton goal. He flashed a shot at goal late on, but it went inches away from the target.
