United star begs Van Gaal for more playing time ahead of European Championship

United defender Paddy McNair has appealed to Van Gaal for more playing time, and a possible change of position from defence  to the holding midfield role.

The Northern Irish man has struggled for a place in Van Gaal's team this season with only nine (9) appearances so far.

He played for his national team as a holding midfielder in their 1-1 draw with Wales and the 1-0 win over  Slovenia.

And his national team manager Michael O'Neill has said the 20 year old is more of a midfielder than a defender.

The player himself has echoed that thought whilst appealing to Van Gaal for more playing time.

"I am learning about the holding midfield position and really enjoy playing it for Northern Ireland"

"A lot of people said when I was growing up that I would end up in midfield and to have played there a few times at international level is great.'' He told the Telegraph.

"If I had the chance to play the holding midfield role at United that would be fantastic.

"If I'm told though to play centre-back, right-back or wherever, I'll be happy enough because I want to play games.

"I've had a lot of injuries this season which haven't helped so my aim is to keep working hard at the club and get as many matches as I can until the end of the season.

"We have Everton on Sunday and if I'm involved that would be great. I really want to keep my fitness up for the Euros and go into that tournament feeling confident."

Four reasons Lukaku would be a perfect signing for United

Manchester United will experience some major shake up, when a new manager arrives in the summer. From all indications, Van Gaal and United will part ways at the end of the season.

José Mourinho is the favorite for the United job.

With José at the helm of affairs at United, Lukaku remain a viable target for United.

Both men worked together at Chelsea, and a reunion at Old Trafford is possible.

Redlyunited looks at four reasons Lukaku would be a perfect signing for United.

1. His age:

Manchester United have been linked with a lot of strikers in the summer. Chief among them are Zlatan Ibrahimovic (34), Edison Cavani (29), Gonzalo Higiuan (28) and a few others.

At 22, Lukaku represents the future.

He has already proven himself as a good goal scorer and all round forward. Young, strong, agile and efficient. He would be a handful addition to any team.

2. He understands the league

Quite a lot of the strikers current linked to United are players that would need time to settle into the country (England), and the league.

Haven already played at Chelsea and currently Everton's highest goal scorer this season and the last, the Belgian understands the league and the country. He'll need less time to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

3. Powerful youthful combination with Martial, Rashford, Lingard.

His arrival at United will make United's attack younger, but with an undoubtable bright prospect.

His combination with either Martial or Rashford looks good on paper.

Their trio can also always interchange positions.

This would likely spark memories of the deadly partnership between C. Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez and Nani.

4. Rooney's aging, perfect replacement

Imagine replacing a former Everton man with a new Everton player. Coincidence: Maybe.

Wayne Rooney's form over the last two seasons have shown that the Englishman is  approaching the twilight of his career.

At thirty, Rooney can't be depended on solely as United's top striker. And getting Lukaku to replace him would almost be perfect.

Exclusive: Wayne Rooney ready to do THIS to hasten his comeback

The Manchester United and England captain's starting place is under threat at both national and club level.

The emergence of Rashford at Old Trafford has raised questions as to if the United captain Will walk back into the starting eleven displacing the very effective youngster.

At the national level, the form of strikers like Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy has also begged the question: Is Wayne guaranteed a starting place in the current Three Lions set up based on current form?

The skipper is currently out injured, but has said he would return to training in about a weeks time. With the European Championship fast approaching, the striker needs to get back to full fitness fast to be favorably considered for a starting place in the England setup.

According to the Daily Star, the United skipper is willing and has spoken to manager Van Gaal about playing with the U-21 team to boost his first team chances in the national setup.

Rooney has been out of action  for for the last six weeks, and is due to return to playing again by middle April. And with  Roy Hodgson expected to name his Euro squad May 12, Rooney faces battle against time to be in top gear for the Championship.

Anthony Martial opens up on his most preferred position

The Manchester United forward has admitted that he is willing to play wherever Van Gaal plays him but he prefers to play upfront.

Van Gaal has used the Frenchman more frequently on the wings, and the up rise of another academy product in Marcus Rashford means Martial has to play more from the left to accommodate the youngster in the team.

“I prefer to play up front. But if the coach puts me on the wing then that means it is better for the team and for me that is the most important thing." He said via the independent.

However stats have shown otherwise, as much of his goals for United have come when he plays on the wings.  The youngster has said he is working hard while he seems to have noticed that he scores more from the wings.

"I am working very hard every day in training,  and it is true that sometimes when I play as the number nine, I have not scored but it is like that.

"With time, I will progress even more and I will be more mature to score even more goals."

Is Martial a good winger or a better striker?

Checkout the top five Manchester United most used players this season

Manchester United have played a total of 48 games this season, (stats correct as at 29-03-2016) and here is a breakdown of the games played so far

30 Premier League matches
8 UEFA Champions League matches
4 UEFA Europa League matches
4 FA Cup matches
2 League Cup matches.

While some players have played just a few games for United this season due to injury, presence of other senior players in their position and consistency, some players have featured in almost every game for United.

Redlyunited brings you a list of the five most capped United players this season so far.

5. David De Gea:

Played 38 of the 48 games so far

The Manchester United shot stopper has been in magnificent form for United so far. He didn't started the season as United's number one, due to his transfer Saga with Real Madrid. Hence he missed a lot of games at the start of the season.
The saga is long over, and he has signed a new contract with United.
He returned to the team, and has been United's best savior this season on countless occasions.

The hastag #davesaves is almost sure to trend on twitter anytime United play.

He has kept 11clean sheets in 26 Premier League matches  this season. He hasn't collected any card in the League this season.

Imagine where United would be on the Premier League table without De Gea.

4. Anthony Martial :

Played 39 of 48 games so far.

When the then relatively unknown teenage forward joined United for a transfer record fee of £36 million,
potentially rising to £58 million, the highest paid for any teenager, a lot felt Van Gaal took that decision in a rush.

He however silent all critics when he came on as a substitute on his debut against Liverpool and scored a beautiful goal.

He followed that up by scoring two goals on his full debut eight days latter against Southampton. Martial ended up scoring four goals in his first four matches, and needed no more introduction to defenders in the League.

At the time of signing him, pundits and fans won't believe he would have played so much games for United in his first season.

He has since scored 12 goals for United in his 39 games with three assists to his credit.

Martial has only been yellow carded once in the league for United this season.

3. Chris Smalling

Played 42 of 48 games so far

In other words,  Smalling has missed only six United games this season, playing 27 of the total 30 league matches for United so far.

At the start of the season, lot of fans felt United would have a lot of problems in defence. Van Gaal signed a number of midfielders but no defender.

A lot of such doubters have been proved wrong with the performance of players like Smalling. He has been a rock in the United defence all through the season. He's been luck with injuries too.

And his partnership with Daley Blind have blossomed. He has always shown the potentials even when playing alongside Rio Ferdinand and Vidic. The question was will he ever get to his personal climax?

Yes. This season, the Englishman has gotten to that expected level.
He can walk into the England camp, with the confidence of  starting games for the Three Lions.

According to Squawka, he has won 51% of his duels this season and has an average pass accuracy of 82%.

2. Juan Mata

Played 43 of 48 games so far

Do you know Juan Mata has featured in all (30) Manchester United's League matches this season. Yes, he has.

The Spanish playmaker started in 27 of the 30, and was a substitute in the remaining 3.

He has been a constant figure for United this season, though he has struggled for consistency at times. He has been one of the major beneficiary of Wayne Rooney's injury, and has gradually made the number 10 spot his.

He has scored five league goals and has four league assist.

According to squawka, Mata has created 41 chances and has an average pass accuracy of 89%.

Mata collected the first red card of his professional career this season.

1. Daley Blind

Played 44 of 48 games so far

The Dutchman alongside Chris Smalling have been the brain and leg behind United's enviable defensive record.

The defender has missed only four games for United so far this season.
At the start of the season a lot of fans questioned Van Gaal continued use of his countrymen as a defender, but with time, Blind has shown how brilliant a defender he can be.

He still shuttles between the centre and left back depending on injuries and players available, but he has shown this season that he is a highly dependable defender. He has been lucky with injuries and has made few mistakes in defence.

His ability to hold on to the ball, cleverly bring the ball out of the defence, play long passes and shots have distinguished him out of the United defenders. He also takes the corners for United, which is a plus to him as a defender.

According to Squawka, Blind has a 100% shot accuracy in the League this season.

Former Spanish keeper claims De Gea should be starting ahead of Casillas for Spain

Former Spanish shot stopper Santiago Canizares has opened up that United goalkeeper David De Gea should be starting for the Spanish national team, while Iker Casillas should not even be be on the bench for the national team.

De Gea's portfolio has been on a rise over the last few seasons, with a lot of breathtaking and consistent performances.

He's one of United's most consistent performers this season, and started in Spain's 1-1 friendly with Italy. He was spectacular in the game, and made a lot of wonderful saves.

Casillas  on the other hand left Madrid for FC Porto two seasons ago, has been on a slight decline. Understandably so: He is aging. He started Spain's most recent friendly against Romania that ended goalless.

Speaking after the game, Canizares told Spanish media outfit El Larguero

“De Gea should have been named as starter a long time ago.

"He has been performing much better than Casillas. I would not pick him (Casillas) as a sub, but there is no doubt that De Gea should have the title role."

The start against Romania made Casillas join Vitalijs Astafjevs of Latvia as Europe's most-capped player as he won his 166th cap for Spain.

Roy Hodgson backs Wayne Rooney for Euro

The England manager has assured his captain that he is in England's plan for the Championship. Rooney is facing immense criticism after the England team defeated World Champions Germany in his absence.

"When he comes back and is fit again he is going to be putting enormous pressure on these players, just like these players will be putting enormous pressure on him - and that is the situation we are looking forward to." He added.

United this season have housed a lot of unused average players that may have to make way for few new effective players if United will find their way back to the summit of English football.

According to the Sun, Dutch star Depay faces been thrown out of United. The £25m new signing from PSV has not only struggled to replicate the form he showed in his last season in Holland, he has been flat, and performed way below the United standard.

Defenders Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are also reported to be on the clear out list. Jones has spend a good portion of the season on the treatment table, and played his last game for United this year in January.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero may also be on his way out of Old Trafford, after Argentine club River Plate confirmed their Interest.

A surprising name been mentioned is Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Frenchman has been arguably United's most effective midfielder this season, and it will be a surprise to see him leave after one season.

With the duo of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger in their thirties and constant injuries to the German, letting Schneiderlin leave will be a huge mistake.

United's reshaping process will depend on who becomes United's manager next season.

Time up Rooney? England fans react to his absence against Germany

England produced one of their best performance in a while against Germany on Saturday, coming from two goals down to defeat the World Champs 3-2 in Berlin.

England and Manchester United captain missed the game due to injury, however in his absence, the Three Lions were effective on the night.

Rooney has not been spectacular for United this season, scoring seven league goals so far.

Here are the  views of English fans on Twitter reacting to his absence.

Would be very dispiriting after adventure and fearlessness of that if we see likes of Milner/Rooney start the first game of the Euros.
@ AdamCrafton_

Roy Hodgson & Louis Van Gaal could both do with dropping Rooney & stop picking him based on past achievements. He's on a rapid decline.
@ DrawtyDevil

Good night for #England.
Bad night for Rooney, Sterling and Wilshire.
Enjoyable, encouraging stuff. Even when 2-0 down.

Rooney shouldn't be anywhere near the squad let alone the team. Stones in for Smalling, Hart back, otherwise as per
@ annochiecottage

@SkyFootball
if your going on form, kane vardy and rashford! We always take the big names and get nowhere! Let the youngsters have a go Roy!
@ darrensales

Rooney is a pundit for ITV for Wednesday's game against Holland. Getting some practice in for the
summer.
@ HylandIan

@HylandIan lol cant see it, Roy loves Rooney so he will start every game which, based on form shouldn't happen
@ bringbackLB

@HylandIan @NicBhriain is it wrong if me to hope he's not going to the euros
@ steviewych

@SkyFootball what role? Joe Hart or Wilshere as Captain and Wayne Rooney on the bench in his garden.
@ PatrickDCullen

@SkyFootball Rooney has no role he's done" younger better players now'
@ PackmanScouse

@SkyFootball Rooney officially has no role. I love the man but he would've slowed way too much
down tonight. He'll be in China soon
@ jameswoods1992

Rooney can stay in bed tho still

England brilliant win over Germany inspired by Kane and Vardy proves Hodgson must ditch Rooney for Euros #eng #FA

@ Shep_62

To be completely honest I sort of want Rooney's injury to stop him from going to the Euros but I also want United to be able to sell him...
2:58 PM - 26 Mar 2016
@ TheMUnitedGirl

If England play in this formation in the summer, there's no case for Rooney's inclusion on current form. It would actually harm the team.
2:15 PM - 26 Mar 2016
@ SebSB

The way Rooney often slows down play for Manchester United in their rare pacy moments?
That's why we don't need him for England at the mo.
2:28 PM - 26 Mar 2016
@ georgiebingham

Very impressed with England tonight, and to think Sturridge hasn't even got a look in. I'm afraid Rooney will hold England back in July.

Please don't bring Rooney back Roy. Pace, verve, urgency - this is what we wanted to see...

Meet the Manchester United duo that made Paul Merson's England team for Euro 2016

With the European Championship months away, managers of qualified European countries face a dilemma of who and who should make the squad.

Sky Sports pundict Paul Merson was asked to select his first eleven for England's first game against Russia in the Championship. Only two United players made his first eleven.

They were  Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney.

Here's what Paul had to say on Smalling:

For me, Chris Smalling is a no-
brainer. He is one of the first names on the team sheet now. He gets better every time he plays - and has improved every week for the last couple of years.

In Paul's team Everton's John Stones partner Smalling in centre defence.

Here's what Paul said about Rooney:

Roy Hodgson will definitely start him and for me he's still the first name on the team sheet.

He's played more than 100 games for his country, he's our all-time leading goalscorer and he's still an exceptional footballer.

Fast forward to the Euros and imagine if Wayne Rooney wasn't in the line-up. That would be a huge shock and Russia would be absolutely delighted."

Rooney for Paul starts on the left side of the England's attack, while Kane leads the line.

Do you think these two United players would be starters for England at Euro 2016?

Former England manager claims Roy Hodgson could have taken the risk of giving Rashford his senior debut

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson thinks Roy Hodgson could have taken the risk of calling United youngster Rashford into the senior squad for England's upcoming friendlies.

The United striker has been a revelation this season and has been called up to the U-20 squad.

Erikson who took Walcott to the 2006 World Cup thinks this coming friendlies provided a good chance for the England manager to access the youngster if he is capable of making the Euro squad.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Talksport, Eriksson said:

"If Roy wants to take a risk with Rashford, he should play him in the friendlies and take a look at him.

"If he’s ready, if he’s good enough, then of course [he should make the squad to the European Championship].

"I took a risk when I took Walcott because he didn’t play any friendly games for us, so that was a risk.

"So it’s better to let him play some friendlies to see if he’s ready or not.”

Northern Ireland manager opens up on McNair best position

However his national team boss Michael O’Neill believes that his best position is in the midfield and that all that he needs is more playing time.

Michael O’Neill experimented it in Northern Ireland 1-1 draw   with Wales. McNair played a little high up the pitch as a defensive midfielder, and did very well on the night.

Speaking after the game, the Northern Ireland boss said:

“He’s just 20, not played a lot of first-team football with Manchester United and typically when he plays for United he plays at centre back or sometimes as a full back but I think that’s his best position, where we played him." He said via Daily Mail.

“He was a physical presence but he showed his quality on the ball. He just needs to get used to playing at this level. I enjoyed him in there in that midfield with Davis and Norwood.”

The 20 year old has had limited playing time at Old Trafford this season, where he's only played nine games starting only four of those.
