United led till the 90th minute, before surrendering the lead to a Diego Costa late goal.
United started both halves with great ball possession, attacking intent, and controlled the tempo of the game, but loss their grip of the game in both the first and second half with time.
United paid for the lack of intensity, concentration and composure when Diego Costa equalized in the 91st minute.
Speaking to the official United website after the match, Rooney said:
"We sat back a bit too much (late into the game)and the game was broken up a bit too much because, in my opinion, we were giving too many free-kicks away.
"We couldn’t get up the pitch and it was difficult at times because Chelsea pushed players up front."
