Liverpool legend hails Wayne Rooney as 'England's last game changer'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has described the Manchester United captain as last 'game changer' England had.

England have failed to lit up the international stage in a long while, with their most recent success coming in Euro '96 where the Three Lions were knocked out in the semifinals by eventual winners Germany.

Carragher believes the national team lacks players that can create something from nothing, but says Rooney was in that category back in 2004.

"Look back at the tournaments in which we have had our best results — the World Cups of 1966,and 1990 plus Euro 1996 — we had two such individuals in Charlton and Paul Gascoigne who had that ability." He said via Daily Express.

"They were something-from-nothing men who opponents looked at with genuine trepidation. Which England players have had that aura since?

"Maybe Wayne Rooney had it in 2004 but he is not as explosive as he was 12 years ago."

Wayne Rooney has had a brilliant competition so far, as he controlled England's first two games from the midfield.

The Three Lions will be hoping for a much more improved performances in the knockout phase of the competition.
