Manchester United have held talks with the representatives of the Portuguese, according to the BBC.
While no agreement has been reached, and neither camp has made it public, negotiations are ongoing.
The former Chelsea manager was sacked almost midway into the season, at his second spell at the club, and has since been a favorite to take up the United job.
Unfortunately, Van Gaal has not had it rosy this season, and speculation about his future has refused to cease.
This has been further increased when neighbours City announced the news that Pep Guardiola will be their new coach next season.
With United currently stuttering this season, and the competition for the supremacy of Manchester heating up, fans and some pundits believe only José Mourinho can wrestle effectively with the Spaniard.
At this stage, nothing is sure, as assistant manager Ryan Giggs, current Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and PSG coach Laurent Blanc are also under consideration.
With United facing the possibility of not playing in the Champions League next season, the end may be in sight for Van Gaal.
But on the other hand, United still have some hope for a late title push, and if that happens or the Dutchman wins any trophy this season, he just may see out his contract at Old Trafford.
Would you want Mourinho to be United's next manager?
