This may come as a surprise to united fans, especially with the team's current goal drought. With Wayne Rooney failing to live up to his goal scoring expectations, and fans clamouring for Martial to lead the line for united, manager Van Gaal has come out to say that he (and his back room staff) doesn't know Martial's best position.
When asked about the Frenchman best position, Van Gaal replied : ”We don’t know yet because he played always in Monaco as the left winger."
Van Gaal also added that he has to select his team based on a lot of factors, admitted that Martial has played from the centre both for Monaco and United.
"And as a manager I have to see what is the best balance in the team, and that’s not so simple. So I have to decide every week also, dependable of the game plan and the opponent, and so on. We have played with him in the striker’s position, that was not the first time for him, but in Monaco he played always on the left wing."
Martial has been brilliant for United, the few times he played from the centre, and most if his goals have been from attacking through the middle.
It remains to be seen if Van Gaal will return the Frenchman to his best position.
