The four time World Footballer of the year has hailed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as an 'English great: who is capable of doing special things in the field.
The Argentine star said:
"There has always been a great deal of respect between myself and Wayne Rooney.
"For me he is the great English player of the generation.'' he said via the Sun.
The United skipper is currently out injured and is expected to step up his come back process by playing with the United U-21 side in their next game against Middlesbrough.
The England skipper also faces a huge debate over his relevance in the Three Lions squad to the European Championship, with the rise of strikers like Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, but Messi thinks Rooney is still a huge plus to any side.
"What he is capable of doing on the field is very special.
"He is one of the few players that would improve any squad in Europe." he added.
